Residents have been given two food waste containers, a small caddy which is designed to fit in the kitchen as a convenient temporary bin to take food waste during meal preparation. There is then a larger, lockable food waste bin which the caddy can be emptied into. This larger food waste bin will be collected on a weekly basis and has been designed to be large enough to hold weekly food waste for an entire family.
In May Gurney’s experience operating similar food waste schemes for 20 local authorities covering 2.2 million people across the UK, once people see how much food they are wasting, they usually cut the amount they throw away by around 25%, which saves them money and is good for the environment.
If large families need additional recycling bins they can be provided. Residents can request additional bins by the following routes:
