Pond project will spruce up seafront

Working on behalf of Torbay Council and the Torbay Development Agency, TOR2 is carrying out improvement works to Abbey Pond to spruce up Torquay seafront before the start of the main summer holiday period.

The bottom of the pond, which is currently made of concrete and is failing in numerous places, is being resealed. The waterfall and fountain, which have not been working efficiently for sometime, are being rewired and a new pump is being installed.

The week-long work project started on 6 June and is expected to be completed by 13 June. It has been carefully planned to ensure that the surrounding area will remain open for the public.

Councillor Jeanette Richards, Torbay Councilís executive lead for tourism and environment, said: "I am delighted that the essential works to the pond will be completed before the start of the school summer holidays.

"While the resealing work is necessary we have taken the decision to make some further improvements to the waterfall, fountain and planting at the same time. It is all part of the council's strategy for regenerating Torbay and making it a place where people will want to visit time and time again.

"Torquay's seafront is a popular destination for people visiting the area so it is important that we keep it looking its best and carry out improvement works such as these when necessary."
